Cyber Safety: Blogging 101

By Madison Police Department Technology Committee

The basics: Described as a “diary on a website,” blogging is a frequently updated personal journal chronicling links at a web site intended for public viewing. Posting blogs allows children to develop both their technical and creative skills. It also lets them connect to other users with similar interests and write about their experiences, their personal lives, popular culture or any other topic.

How to determine if your child is involved with blogs

Whether your child has their own blog or frequents other’s blogs, here are some discussion starters to help learn more about blogging and their life.

• Do you keep a blog?

• Who do you think is reading your blog?

• Would you feel comfortable letting anyone read your blog?

• Is your blog set to private? Why or why not?

• What do you think your blog says about you?

• Can you show me some of your favorite blogs?

Blogging safety

Follow these easy steps to help ensure your child’s safety when blogging.

• Establish guidelines with your child before you allow him or her to blog, such as reviewing the blog before posting.

• Ensure your child is using privacy settings.

• Have your child remove any identifying information from all postings—full name, age, location or address, phone numbers and school information.

• Caution your child about the dangers of posting inappropriate or provocative information or images.

• Encourage your child to come to you if anything on the blog makes him or her feel uncomfortable.
