Light on Your Feet

When it comes to boosting your health, sometimes all it takes is your own two feet and a pack of friends. So grab some comfy shoes and join one of these running (and walking) groups designed to get you in tip-top shape—no marathon experience required

By Anna Asendorf

Walk This Way: Whether you are just getting started or a seasoned runner looking for a change of pace, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy the benefits of a walk. To get on a good regimen, join a community walking group, such as the weekly Tuesday evening walking club based at fitness store Catalyst that offers easily paced strolls with good company. When kid(s) are in tow, join Stroller Strides of Madison to meet new moms, swap advice and stay fit along the way.

Jog Along: If you keep finding ways to avoid that an evening jog, a running club can help you stay motivated. Whether you’re looking for a three- to five-mile run or a jog with your girlfriends, check out Movin’ Shoes, a store that offers three evening runs each week, including a women’s only group. If you prefer a morning run, visit the Madison Run Club online for dates, locations and times throughout the month.

Run With It: For those with lofty aspirations, such as finally completing that half or full marathon, Madison has running clubs for you, too! Reach your goals with the Berkeley Running Company, which offers group runs and training sessions five days a week. Or if you need that extra push, enjoy friendly competition by joining the team at Fleet Feet Sports. On your mark, get set, run!
