Snacks Worth Smiling About

It’s no secret that certain foods and drinks will do a body good—including your teeth. Promote healthier teeth with these snacks recommended by Dr. Christine Haag, a dentist with First Choice Dental Group

Water
This no-calorie liquid is a no-brainer for good health. In your mouth, it not only helps wash out food that lingers long after chowtime is done, but it helps your mouth form saliva, which is essential for cleansing teeth, controlling bacteria and ridding your mouth of decay.

Apples and Pears
Not only do these fruits make great grab-and-go snacks, they also contain ample amounts of water to help prevent tooth decay and cavities.

Dairy and Protein
Snacks high in calcium and phosphates—such as cheese or nuts—can help rid the mouth of acids that break down tooth enamel. Dairy and proteins can even help to strengthen enamel after acids from other foods have led to decay.

Green Tea
Consumed sans sweeteners, green tea contains antioxidants that help fight the formation of dental plaque, which plays a role in tooth decay, gum disease and is even associated with other health problems such as heart disease.

Celery
Thanks to its chewy texture, celery (and many other raw veggies like carrots) is the perfect snack for helping form that all-important saliva to keep your mouth freshly cleansed.
