Play Around Town in Mineral Point
Dig into a historic mining town’s past
You don’t have to dig deep to find the rich vein of history in Mineral Point. The Cornish miners who made this small town their home in the early 19th century marked a presence on the land that can still be felt as you excavate all the city has to offer.
Although the mines ran dry long ago, the traditions of these settlers from England still guide the local economy. From restaurant owners who specialize in traditional Cornish pasties filled with meat, potatoes and onions to shopkeepers who stock their stores with Cornish jewelry featuring intricate Celtic knotwork, it’s clear the community continues to be sustained by its cultural history.
Mineral Point’s rich history is even evident in the distinctive stone cottages built for Cornish mining families. The streets are lined with classic structures that have been restored and repurposed to house local businesses. Because of the careful preservation work, Mineral Point became the first city in Wisconsin to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
From their homes to the food on their tables, Mineral Point’s residents have kept their shared history alive, developing a community that cherishes the culture at its bedrock. Dig into the deposits of Mineral Point’s past and discover a reservoir of history. —Emily Bradley
